FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Westminster College baseball team split with Mount Saint Vincent in a doubleheader on Wednesday.
The Titans lost game one, 7-3, and won by the same score in game two.
In game one, Mount led 7-0 after two runs in the first inning and five runs in the fourth. Sophomore
Luke Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley) put the Titans on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with an RBI-double, scoring junior
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union). Westminster added two more runs in the sixth after sophomore
Tyler Zaletel (Perry, OH / Perry) grounded in freshman
Connor Cox (Ridge, MD / Leonardtown) and junior
Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) singled in Ferlin. Titan freshman pitcher
Jaret Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles McKinley) (0-1) threw 5.0 innings, while giving up seven runs (two earned) on nine hits. Johnson struck out four batters and walked one.
In game two, the Titans took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Rossier tripled home Salmen and sophomore
Hunter Alexander (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) brought Rossier home with a sacrifice fly. Mount tied the game at 2 with two runs in the second inning. Westminster regained the lead, 3-2, in the third inning, following an RBI-single by Ferlin, scoring Salmen. Salmen scored on a passed ball in the fourth, extending the Titans' lead to 4-2. Travis Lauster (Slippery Rock, PA / Slippery Rock) with a fielder's choice. Mount cut Westminster's lead to 6-3 with a run in the sixth, but the Titans matched it after Guerrieri scored Alexander with a single in the bottom of the sixth. Titan freshman pitcher
Billy Newcomer (McDonald, PA / South Fayette) (1-0) threw five inning and allowed two runs (none earned) on one hit. Newcomer struck out four and walked the same.
The Titans (3-5) will conclude their Florida trip on Thursday, March 16 with a nine-inning game against Gettysburg College at Vero Beach, Fla. with an 11 a.m. start time.
