Women’s Basketball: No. 8 Westminster Wins, 55-49, at No. 5 Grove City in First Round of PAC Tournament

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The eighth-seeded Westminster College women's basketball team won, 55-49, at fifth-seeded Grove City College in the first round of the 2016-17 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament.
 
First-year Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led the Titans with a career-high 18 points and registered her fifth double-double of the season as she tied a team-high with 10 rebounds. Fromknecht also had a game-high six blocks, which is the second most in a game in school history. First-year Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) also had 10 boards. Sophomore Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) netted eight points, while Gage and senior Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) each had seven points. Junior Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) added five points. First-year Kayla Bennett (Kent, OH / Theodore Roosevelt) tallied five rebounds, to go along with four points. Durbin dished-out a game-high four assists, while Gage pocketed a team-best two steals.
 
The Titans outshot the Wolverines 37.7% (20-53) to 34.5% (20-58) and had a 38-35 advantage in rebounds.
 
Westminster led 10-3 with 7:11 remaining in the first quarter. Grove City answered with an 8-0 run to take an 11-10 lead with 1:37 on the clock. The Titans got back in front and led 14-13 at the end of one. The game was tied at 18 with 7:50 left in the second. Westminster orchestrated a 6-0 run and led 24-18 with 5:06 on the clock and led 28-24 at intermission. In the third quarter, Westminster took its largest lead of the game, 40-32, after Cook made a jumper with 1:58 remaining. The Wolverines, however, ended the frame with a 7-0 run to cut the Titans' lead to 40-39. Westminster was up, 50-45, with 4:02 left in the game, however, Grove City cut its lead to 50-49 with 2:17 remaining. The Titans sealed the win after clutch free throws by Cook and Durbin.
 
The Titans advance to the quarterfinals and will play at fourth-seeded Waynesburg University on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m.
