ERIE, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost to non-conference opponent Penn State Behrend, 58-53, on the road Wednesday evening.
The Titans (1-5) started the game on a 16-3 run that lasted six minutes and 22 seconds. Sophomore
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) scored seven points during the run and the Titans held a 21-7 lead at the end of one. In the second quarter, senior
Paige Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) made her second three-pointer of the evening at the 5:20 mark, putting Westminster up by 18 (28-10). The Titans capitalized on rebounds, outrebounding the Lions 25-7, including 20-4 on the defensive side in the first half. Westminster led at half time, 32-20.
Senior
Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) opened the third quarter scoring with two free-throws at the 7:46 mark, giving the Titans a 14-point lead (34-20). The Lions (3-5), however, fueled a 17-3 run behind two three-pointers from guard Ally Dillman, to tie the game, 37-37. The Titans led by one, 40-39, at the end of three.
Penn State Behrend took their first lead of the game at the 9:24 mark in the fourth off a three-pointer from Nicole Boyer. Cook made two free-throws to tie the game at 42 and E. Fromknecht made a free-throw to give Westminster the lead again (43-42) with eight minutes to go. The Lions went 5-8 from the field in the stretch of five minutes to regain the lead, 55-50. Penn State Behrend held on the rest of the way, winning 58-53.
Cook finished the game with 14 points, including a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line. E. Fromknecht also had 14 points, to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk tied a career-high with a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior
Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) finished with 11 rebounds to go along with three assists. Junior
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) totaled eight points and five rebounds. Quinn added eight points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Westminster out rebounded Penn State Behrend, 43-30, and out-shot the Lions, 38.6% (17-44) to 31.3% (21-67). The Lions led 18-6 in steals and scored 21 points off of turnovers, compared to Westminster's 12.
Westminster is back on the court at home Saturday, December 9 against Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Bethany College. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
