Women’s Basketball: Hiram Holds Off Titan Comeback

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 52-50, at home to non-conference foe Hiram College Monday evening.
 
The Titans were down 46-31 at the end of the third quarter, however, came back to tie the game 50-50 with 19 seconds left. Hiram sealed the win with two free throws by Alainna Conroy in the final seconds.
 
The Titans started the game with a 7-2 lead after senior Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) found sophomore Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) for a layup with 5:08 on the clock. The Terriers, however, outscored Westminster 13-2 for the remainder of the quarter and led 15-9 at the end of one. Hiram maintained its lead in the second quarter and had its largest of the first half (32-14) with 2:20 left. The Terries led 31-18 at intermission. In the third quarter, the Titans got within single digits (37-29) of Hiram's lead when sophomore Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry Twp, PA / Seneca Valley) made a layup with 3:46 remaining. Hiram led 46-31 at the end of three. In the final frame, Westminster outscored Hiram 19-6. With 19 seconds left, senior Paige Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) found sophomore Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohawk) for a three-pointer, tying the game at 50.
 
E. Fromknecht tied a game-high with a team-best 15 points (7-of-13), to go along with a team-high eight rebounds and added a team-high four assists. Senior Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) registered 10 points and seven rebounds. Quinn tallied eight points, while junior Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) had six. Gage added seven rebounds, while scoring five points and registered a game- and career-high three blocks. Quinn tied a career-high with a team-best three steals.
 
Westminster outshot Hiram 38.6% (22-57) to 30.2% (19-63) and outrebounded the Terriers 46-39.
 
The Titans fell to 1-2 overall, while Hiram improved to 2-5 on the season.
 
Westminster is back in action Wednesday, Nov. 29 with a road PAC game at Chatham University at 6 p.m.
