YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Westminster College men's basketball team lost, 91-83, at Division I Youngstown State University Tuesday night, despite a 49-41 halftime lead.
Senior Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) earned his 1,000
th career point. Scott becomes the 38
th Titan ever to reach 1,000 career points.
Titan sophomore Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) tied a career-high with a game-high 30 points (10-of-20). Three other Titans scored in double-digits in Scott (18), senior Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) (14), and junior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) (10). Scott registered a double-double as he tied a game-high with 10 rebounds. Vrabel registered nine boards, while adding a team-high two blocks and tying a game-high with three steals. Armwood dished out a game- and career-high eight assists.
The Titans took their first lead of the game when junior Marco Delorenzo (Canfield, OH / Canfield) made a three-pointer (7-6) with 17:50 on the clock. Westminster maintained its lead until the 12:56 mark when the Penguins led 19-18. Westminster regained the lead and went on a 5-0 run, capped off with a jumper by Scott, and led 23-19 with 12:10 remaining. The Penguins responded with an 8-0 run and led 27-23 with just over 10 minutes left. YSU took its largest lead of the half (33-27) with 6:55 on the clock. The Titans answered with a 22-5 run to take their largest lead of the frame (49-38), capped off with a three by Kane-Johnson with 36 seconds remaining. Westminster led 49-41 at halftime. In the second half, the Titans kept their lead until the 13:10 mark when the Penguins led 61-60. Westminster battled back and led 64-63 after Kane-Johnson split a pair of free throws with 10:46 left. That, however, would be the Titans' last lead of the game. Youngstown State finished strong, outscoring the Titans 28-19 for the remainder of the game.
The loss was the Titans' first of the year, falling to 3-1. The Penguins improved to 2-2 overall.
YSU outshot Westminster 44.4% (32-72) to 47.4% (36-76) and outrebounded the Titans 53-34.
The Titans return to the court Saturday, Nov. 25 for a home game against Franciscan University of Steubenville at 2 p.m.
