GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team opened its 2017-18 season with a 77-55 win at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in a non-conference game Wednesday night.
Three Titans scored in double figures, led by senior Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) with 14 points (7-12). Junior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) (11) and sophomore Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) (10) also scored in double digits for Westminster. Scott notched a double-double as he earned a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) added 10 boards and nine points. Armwood made a game-best three three-pointers and dished out a game-high five assists. Vrabel tallied a team-high two blocks, to go along with a game-high two steals.
The Titans never trailed in the game. Westminster was up 17-15 in the first half with 9:26 on the clock, before going on a 9-3 run to take a commanding 26-15 lead with 4:57 left. A three-pointer by sophomore Lloyd Chatman (Columbus, OH / Reynoldsburg) gave the Titans their largest lead of the half, 37-21, with 11 seconds remaining; Armwood earned the assist. Westminster led by the same at halftime. The Titans maintained their double-digit lead in the second half and had their largest lead of the game (24 points) when Chatman made another three-point shot, extending Westminster's lead to 53-29 with 14:39 to play.
For the game, Pitt-Greensburg (0-1) outshot Westminster 38.6 percent (22-57) to 36.6 percent (26-71). The Titans outrebounded the Bobcats, 47-38. Westminster registered 23 second-chance points.
Westminster (1-0) is back on the court with its annual Buzz Ridl Classic for its home opener, starting on Friday, Nov. 17. The Titans will face Muskingum University on Friday at 8 p.m. and Penn. State Beaver on Saturday at 4 p.m.
