Men’s Basketball: Titans Open Buzz Ridl Classic with 89-80 Win Against Muskingum

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 89-80, against non-conference foe Muskingum University in the opening day of the 2017 Buzz Ridl Classic Friday evening.
 
Senior Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) led the Titan offense with 21 points, to go along with nine rebounds and a game-high two blocks. Sophomore Cameron Kane-Johnson (Niles, OH / Niles) scored 19 points, while tying a game-high with five three-pointers. Senior Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) also scored in double-digits with 16 points (8-of-10) and grabbed eight boards. Sophomore Blake Payne (Ashtabula, OH / Jefferson Area) came off the bench with a career-best in points (8) and rebounds (6). Junior Austin Armwood (Columbus, OH / Westerville North) added seven points and dished out a team-high six assists. Junior Marco Delorenzo (Canfield, OH / Canfield) and freshman Isaac Stamatiades (Elkridge, MD / Avalon) each had six points.
 
The game was tied at 14 in the first half with 11:16 remaining. Westminster orchestrated a 26-14 run and led 40-28 with 1:50 on the clock. The Titans led 43-33 at intermission. Muskingum opened the second half with a 17-6 run and led 50-49 with 14:46 on the clock. The Muskies had their largest lead of the game of five points twice, with the latest coming at the 6:49 mark (69-64). The Titans answered with a 5-0 run and tied the game at 69, capped off with a three by Kane-Johnson. Kane-Johnson then put the Titans in front, 72-69, with another three-pointer and Westminster never looked back, outscoring the Muskies 17-11 for the remainder of the game.
 
Westminster outshot Muskingum 47.1% (28-65) to 43.1% (28-65) and outrebounded the Muskies, 49-29. The Titans also held a 27-6 advantage in second-chance points.
 
The Titans improved to 2-0 overall, while the Muskies dropped to 0-1.
 
Westminster will close out the Buzz Ridl Classic on Saturday, Nov. 18 against Penn. State Beaver at 4 p.m. Muskingum will play Thiel College at 2 p.m. Thiel won, 71-52, against Penn. State in the first game on Friday night.
