WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Westminster College women's soccer team defeated Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Waynesburg University, 3-2, on Tuesday evening.
The win marked the first for the Titans in conference play. Westminster improved to 6-5 (1-1), while Waynesburg dropped to 5-4-1 (1-1).
Titan first year
Alexandria Applin (Beavercreek Township, OH / Beavercreek) struck the back of the net first at the 20th minute mark with a 20-yard strike from the right side. Applin received the ball from a throw-in, took one touch and used her right foot to find the left side of the net and give Westminster a 1-0 lead.
Titan junior
Keely Birsic (North Ridgeville, OH / Elyria Catholic) extended Westminster's lead in the 31st minute. Birsic controlled a throw-in pass from first-year
Jocelyn Gillette (Natrona Heights, PA / Highlands) and dribbled up field before connecting on a strike from 25 yards out, for her fifth goal on the season.
Waynesburg's Emma Gozzard scored just four minutes later for the Yellow Jackets, making it a 2-1 game going into halftime. In the 55th minute, Waynesburg's Melanie Byer received a cross from Emily Hill and scored, making it a tied game at 2-2.
Gillette broke the 2-2 tie in the 68th minute. Gillette dribbled coast to coast, starting from midfield and finished from 20 yards out to find the top left corner of the net. The goal, which was Gillette's first of the season, also proved to be the eventual game winner as the Titans held off the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way.
Applin finished with seven shots, four of which were on goal. Birsic tallied five shots, including four on goal. Titan sophomore

Marissa Grande (Hubbard, OH / Hubbard) and
Skylar Bryant (Boardman, OH / Boardman) all finished with two shots.

Laura Page (Bethel Park, PA / Bethel Park) had six saves in a complete game effort.
Westminster is back in action Saturday, October 7 at home against Geneva College. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
