NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost, 59-54, at home to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College Wednesday night.
Senior
Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) led the Titan offense with 15 points, while junior
Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) scored 13. Junior
Paige Quinn (Pittsburgh, PA / Shaler) and sophomore
Jackie Mathews (Pittsburgh, PA / OLSH) registered seven and six points, respectively. First-year
Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led Westminster on the glass with seven rebounds, to go along with five points. First-year
Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry PA / Seneca) added six boards. Durbin and Mathews each dished out a game-high three assists. Mathews also had two blocks, while Quinn pocketed a team-best three steals.
Westminster (5-9, 0-7 PAC) outshot Grove City 40.4% (19-47) to 31.1% (23-74). The Wolverines outrebounded the Titans 44-39, including a 20-6 advantage in offensive boards.
Down 5-0 in the first quarter, Westminster orchestrated a 7-0 run to take a 7-5 lead with 5:04 on the clock. The Titans led by as much as nine points (18-9) when Lyczek made a layup with two seconds remaining. The Titans led 18-11 at the end of one. The Wolverines started the second quarter with an 8-0 run to regain the lead, 19-18, with 8:12 on the clock. The Titans responded with an 8-2 run and led 26-21 with 5:12 left. Westminster led 26-24 at intermission. Westminster went up 31-24 in the third quarter before Grove City went on an 11-0 run and led 35-31 with 5:49 on the clock. The Titans recaptured the lead (38-37) after a 7-2 run with 3:55 remaining. Grove City, however, went back in front and led 42-38 at the end of three. Grove City had its largest lead of nine points when it led 47-38 with 7:54 remaining. Westminster mustered a 12-3 run to tie the game at 50 with 3:11 to play. The Titans were able to tie the game again (52-52) with 2:38 on the clock, but were unable to get back in front for the remainder of the game.
The Titans are back in action Saturday, January 14 with a 4 p.m. game at Saint Vincent College.
