NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep over Geneva College after freshman
Michael Douds (Erie, PA / Cathedral Prep) connected on a walk-off single in the ninth inning of game two at home on Saturday.
The Titans won game one, 8-1, and 7-6 in the second game. Westminster has now won seven straight games.
In game one, Westminster (9-25, 6-15 PAC) took a 3-0 lead with three runs in the first inning; junior
Sean Coyne (New Castle, PA / New Castle) singled home sophomore
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) and sophomore
Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) doubled in freshman
Michael Douds (Erie, PA / Cathedral Prep) and Coyne. Geneva (13-25, 4-20 PAC) scored its lone run in the third inning. The Titans added three more runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth. Coyne had a team-high three RBIs. Senior pitcher
Kyle Borton (Mineral Ridge, OH / Mineral Ridge) (3-6) threw a complete game, while giving up one run on six hits. He struck out six and walked three.
In the second game, the Titans had a 3-0 lead after four innings of play. Junior
Jared Baummer (Reynoldsville, PA / Dubois) scored Salmen on a ground out in the first inning. Rossier tripled home Douds in the second and freshman
Ben Canty (Pittsburgh, PA / Keystone Oaks) singled in Rossier in the fourth. The Golden Tornadoes got on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth inning and took a 5-3 lead with four in the sixth. Westminster extended play as it tied the game, 5-5, after Douds scored two runs off a single with two outs; Dunn and freshman
Travis Lauster (Slippery Rock, PA / Slippery Rock) scored. Geneva took a 6-5 lead with a run in the top of the ninth. Douds answered again in the bottom of the ninth after a walk-off single, scoring Dunn and Baummer. Salmen (1-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless inning and only allowed two hits with a strike out in relief.
The Titans will next host Waynesburg University for their Senior Day on Friday, May 6 at 4 p.m.
