NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team swept Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Grove City College in shutout fashion in a home doubleheader on Wednesday.
With the sweep, Westminster has also clinched the number one seed and the hosting rights for the 2016 PAC Championship Tournament, which will start on Friday, May 6.
The Titans, winners of 19-straight, remained undefeated in the PAC (16-0) and improved to 23-11 overall. Grove City dropped to 4-21 overall and 1-15 in the conference.
Westminster won 15-0 in game one and 4-0 in the second game.
In game one, Westminster scored six runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third, and six in the fourth. Six Titans registered multiple RBIs, led by first-year Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) with three. Senior Alexis Sheffer (Seneca, PA / Cranberry), sophomore Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove), sophomore Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango), sophomore Gabby Butcher (Youngstown, OH / Austintown-Fitch), and sophomore Courtney Dieterich (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) each registered two RBIs. Liverman, sophomore Courtney Cohen (New Wilmington, PA / Wilmington), Rohrer, Owrey, Butcher, and Dieterich each had a double. Rohrer improved to 12-6 overall after she pitched a complete game in five scoreless innings, while only allowing three hits. She struck out eight batters and walked two.
In the second game, Titan senior pitcher Amber Forrest (Clear Spring, MD / Clear Spring) improved to 11-5 overall and only allowed two hits in a complete game effort. Forrest struck out six and walked none. The Titans led 2-0 in the second inning after sophomore Nicole Anderson (Oakmont, PA / Riverview) scored Rohrer and sophomore Hannah Ritter (Front Royal, VA / Skyline) brought home Owrey with a ground out. Sheffer and Ritter scored the final two runs in the fifth and sixth inning, respectively. Rohrer earned a double, while Liverman registered a triple.
Westminster will next play at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky. in its PAC finale on Saturday, April 30. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
