BETHANY, W. Va. – The Westminster College baseball team completed the series sweep over Bethany College with an 8-7 win on the road on Sunday. The Titans swept the Bison at home in a doubleheader on Saturday.
On Sunday, Westminster (5-25, 3-15 PAC) had a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Bethany (7-23, 3-13 PAC) cut the Titans' lead to 6-3 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Both teams scored two runs in the sixth inning and Westminster led 8-5 going into the seventh. The Bison added a run in the seventh and another in their last at bat in the ninth, to pull within one run of Westminster's lead. Cory Pullen (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) forced a fly out and earned his first save on the season.
For the game, Bethany out-hit Westminster 14-13. Westminster sophomore
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, including one RBI. Titan junior
Sean Coyne (New Castle, PA / New Castle) (2-6) pitched 3.1 innings, while giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out three batters and walked the same. Coyne added a team-high two RBIs and two doubles, while junior
Ty Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley) added an RBI.
Jared Baummer (Reynoldsville, PA / Dubois) also had two hits, including a triple.
Westminster will next play a nine-inning game at Geneva College on Friday, April 29 with a 4:30 p.m. start time.
