Men’s Lacrosse: Titans Lose First Game of Season to Saint Vincent

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team lost, 14-7, at home to Saint Vincent College in an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) matchup on Saturday.
 
Saint Vincent (3-5, 2-1 ORLC) took a 3-0 lead with three goals in the first quarter (10:24, 8:50, 7:08). Westminster (2-1, 1-1 ORLC) got on the board after sophomore Shamon Walker (Pittsburgh, PA / Milton Hershey) found classmate Zack Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park) for a score at the 4:56 mark in the first, cutting the Bearcats' lead to 3-1. Saint Vincent added another score with 4:39 remaining and led 4-1 after one quarter of play.
 
In the second quarter, the Titans scored back-to-back goals courtesy of freshman Ryan Shorts (Westlake Village, CA / Oak Park) (9:36) and Zack Shorts (8:01), bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of Saint Vincent. Zack Shorts now has a team-high 11 goals on the year. The Bearcats registered two more goals (7:04, 4:01) to take a 6-3 lead. Titan freshman Max Wike (Highland, MD / Resrvoir) scored with 3:39 remaining to make the score 6-4. Saint Vincent added a goal at the 2:48 mark and had a 7-4 halftime lead. 
 
The Bearcats recorded four-straight goals (13:32, 4:49, 3:42, 1:25) in the third quarter to take a commanding 11-4 lead. A goal by each freshman Alex Kennedy (Moon Township, PA / Moon Area) (10:57) and classmate Luke Murawski (Moon Township, PA / Moon Area) (7:21) for Westminster, in the fourth, made the score 11-6. For the remainder of the contest, Saint Vincent scored three goals, while the Titans added one when Ryan Shorts found Wike with 2:07 remaining.
 
Titan freshman goalkeeper Carter Hall (Zeeland, MI / Zeeland West) (2-1) earned a season-high 17 saves in a complete-game effort.
 
Saint Vincent's Brendon Masten had a game-high four goals, while teammate Charlie Russo had a game-high seven ground balls. For the Titans, Zack Shorts and freshman Matt Trella (Moon Twp, PA / Moon Area) each had four ground balls. Overall, Saint Vincent had a 44-25 advantage in ground balls.
 
Westminster will next compete at Bethany College on Wednesday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m.
