Baseball: Westminster Splits With Hiram in High-Scoring Doubleheader

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at home against Hiram College Tuesday night. The Titans lost game one, 16-12, but regrouped and won 19-9 in the nightcap.

In game one, senior
Ryan Dunn (Freeport, PA / Freeport) put Westminster in front 1-0 in the first inning with a solo home run, his first of the season. Hiram (2-11) tied the game with a run in the second and took a 7-1 lead with six runs in the third. The Terriers led 16-1 after scoring four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. The Titans rallied with two runs in the sixth and nine in the seventh, but were unable to overcome the deficit. For the game, Hiram out-hit Westminster 13-8. Jared Baummer (Reynoldsville, PA / Dubois), junior
Sean Coyne (New Castle, PA / New Castle), and junior
Kellen Gursky (Greenville, PA / Reynolds). Baummer added a triple, while Coyne also had a home run, his team-high second of the season. Freshman
Cody Acon (Industry, PA / Western Beaver) (0-3) pitched 2.1 innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits. He struck out one batter and walked four.

In the nightcap, Westminster was down 9-8 going into the bottom of the fifth. The Titans, however, registered nine runs in the fifth to take a commanding 17-9 lead. Sophomore
Brandon Rossier (Wexford, PA / North Allegheny) and Gursky led the scoring charge with a two-run hit each. The Titans added insurance with two more runs in the sixth. Freshman
Luke Ferlin (Latrobe, PA / Ligonier Valley), freshman
Travis Lauster (Slippery Rock, PA / Slippery Rock), and Baummer each recorded a team-high four RBIs. Ferlin also had a game-high three doubles, while Rossier and Lauster added a double apiece. Freshman
Joseph Salmen (New Castle, PA / Union) added a triple. Coyne (1-2) earned the win after pitching 4.0 innings in relief, while giving up two runs on five hits. He struck out five batters and walked one.

The Titans (2-13) will next compete against Grove City College in a nine-inning game on Friday, April 1 at home at 4 p.m.
