NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College softball team lost both of its games in its home-opening doubleheader to Penn State Altoona Tuesday night.
The Titans lost, 7-6, in game one, and 5-0, in game two.
In game one, Penn State (9-5) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Hannah Ritter (Front Royal, VA / Skyline) put the Titans in front, 2-1, with a two-run RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore
Alexa Owrey (New Castle, PA / Shenango) extended Westminster's lead in the fifth to 4-1 with a two-run RBI-double. The Lions tied the game, 4-4, with three runs in the sixth. The Titans took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth after first-year
Kailey Liverman (Purcellville, VA / Loudoun Valley) and sophomore
Emiley Westfall (Jefferson, OH / Perry) each had an RBI. Penn State answered with three runs in the final inning. The Lions registered the go-ahead run with two outs off a two-run single. Sophomore
Jazmyn Rohrer (Purcellville, VA / Woodgrove) (2-5) pitched five innings, while giving up four runs on four hits. She struck out nine and walked four.
In the second game, the Lions scored one run in the fourth inning and four in the seventh. Senior
Amber Forrest (Clear Spring, MD / Clear Spring) (2-5) threw 6.1 innings, while giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and striking out three.
Westminster (4-10) will next compete at Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, March 23 in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 3:30 p.m.
