NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Down 40-32 at halftime, the Westminster College men's basketball team came back and won 79-78 against Geneva College at home on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
Tied 10-10 in the first half, Geneva (5-20, 5-13 PAC) went on a 7-0 run to take a 17-10 lead with 14:20 remaining. The Golden Tornadoes led by as much as 11 points (29-18) with 7:28 on the clock. Westminster (8-17, 8-10 PAC) responded with a 10-2 run, capped off by a traditional three-point play by senior
Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), to cut Geneva's lead to 31-28 with 4:09 on the clock. The Golden Tornadoes ended the half with a 9-4 run and led 40-32 at halftime.
In the second half, Geneva maintained its lead and was in front 55-46 with 13:53 remaining in the game. The Titans answered with a 17-6 run with 8:10 to play, capped off with a three-pointer by sophomore
Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle), to take their first lead (63-61) since early in the first half. Westminster stayed ahead and led 79-74 after a layup by Carswell with 1:23 remaining. Geneva cut the Titans' lead to 79-78 and had a chance to take the lead with less than 20 seconds remaining, however a layup came up short as time expired.
Domenick led the Titans with 21 points (including a team-best four three-pointers), to go along with a team-high four assists. Carswell and freshman
Austin Armwood (Westerville, OH / Westerville North) scored 17 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomores
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) and
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) recorded nine points each, while freshman
AJ Grant (Warren, OH / Warren JFK) added seven. Scott tied a game-high with a team-best seven rebounds, while pocketing a game- and career-high four steals.
Seventh-seeded Westminster will host 10
th-seeded Washington & Jefferson College (1-24, 1-17 PAC) on Monday at 7 p.m. in a "play-in" game of the 2015-16 PAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
Admission to all PAC Championship Tournament contests is $5 for adults and $2 for students, with students at PAC host institutions admitted for free with valid ID. Championship tournament programs will be on sale for $1.
