NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team won, 63-60, at home over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Bethany College Wednesday night.
Titan sophomore
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) tied a career-high with a game-high 18 points.
Westminster (6-16, 6-9 PAC) led the entire first half and had its largest lead, 13-3, when sophomore
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) scored a layup with 14:09 on the clock. Bethany (14-8, 10-5 PAC) got within two points three times, but the Titans remained in front and led 28-24 at halftime.
The Bison took their first lead of the game after back-to-back three-pointers by Javonte' Trujillo in the second half, putting Bethany up 30-28 with 18:22 remaining. Bethany led 43-36, its largest of the contest, with 11:49 on the clock. The Titans battled back and went on a 13-3 run, capped off by a layup from Vrabel, and led 49-46 with 7:16 remaining. Bethany responded with a 12-5 run and held a 58-54 lead with 3:20 left. Tied 59-59 with under a minute to go, Vrabel made a layup with 34 seconds remaining, putting Westminster in front 61-59. Bethany's Antonio Rudolph split a pair of free throws, cutting Westminster's lead to 61-60 with 11 seconds remaining. Sophomore
Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle) extended the Titans' lead to 63-60 with two free throws with six seconds on the clock. Bethany had a chance to tie the game, but a three-point attempt as time expired was off the mark.
Domenick scored 17 points, while senior
Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Scott tallied six each. Freshman
AJ Grant (Warren, OH / Warren JFK) added five points. Vrabel and Scott each had a team-high six rebounds, while Vrabel had a team-best three blocks. Vrabel also tied junior
Jason Pilarski (Pittsburgh, PA / Brentwood) with a team-high three steals. Freshman
Austin Armwood (Westerville, OH / Westerville North) tied a game-high with a team-best five assists, while Domenick registered four.
Westminster will next play at Thiel College on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
