Women’s Basketball: Titans Open 2016-17 Season with 75-66 Loss at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio – The Westminster College women's basketball team opened its 2016-17 season with a 75-66 loss at Hiram College Wednesday night. 

Four Titans scored in double-digits, led by first-year Brooke Lyczek (Cranberry PA / Seneca) with 12 points, which came off a game-high four three-pointers. Senior Rachel Durbin (Lowellville, OH / Lowellville) (11), first-year Emily Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) (11), and junior Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) (10) also scored in double figures. Kristine Fromknecht led Westminster on the glass with eight rebounds, while Emily Fromknecht collected six. Titan first-year Aliya Gage (New Castle, PA / Mohwak) dished out a game-high five assists, while first-year Francesca Sicari (Erie, PA / McDowell) pocketed a team-best three steals.
 
Westminster (0-1) outshot Hiram 43.4% (23-53) to 37.9% (22-58). Both teams had 35 rebounds.
 
Tied 8-8 with 2:17 remaining in the first quarter, Hiram (3-0) went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-8 lead at the end of the frame. The Terries took their first double-digit lead (18-8) with 9:22 remaining in the second quarter and took their largest lead of the half (31-15) with 2:48 on the clock. Hiram held a 36-23 halftime lead. Hiram was up 41-26 in the third quarter, however, the Titans responded with an 8-0 run to cut the Terriers' lead to 41-34 with 4:57 remaining. Hiram maintained the lead and led 54-46 at the end of three quarters. The Titans got within five points of Hiram's lead (59-54) with 6:33 remaining in the game, however, that would be the closest Westminster would get for the remainder of the contest.
 
Westminster is back in action Saturday, November 19, with a non-conference game at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
