Men’s Basketball: Armwood Leads Titans to 74-63 Win Over Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Freshman Austin Armwood (Westerville, OH / Westerville North) scored a career-high 21 points, leading the Westminster College men's basketball team to a 74-63 win over Thiel College at home Saturday afternoon.

Armwood's point total is the most by any Titan in a single game this season.

Westminster (3-10, 3-3 PAC) never trailed in the game. The Titans took their first double-digit lead (17-7) when freshman AJ Grant (Warren, OH / Warren JFK) made a three-pointer with 11:18 remaining in the first half. Westminster took its largest lead of the half when senior Charlie Wallander (Pittsburgh, PA / Baldwin) converted on a traditional three-point play, extending Westminster's lead to 25-12 with 6:31 on the clock. Westminster led 31-23 at intermission.

Thiel (5-8, 3-3 PAC) cut Westminster's lead to 31-30 after starting the second half with a 7-0 run less than two minutes in. The Tomcats got within one point again of Westminster's lead (39-38) with 14 minutes remaining, however, Westminster responded with a 13-3 run and led 52-41 with 10 minutes left. Thiel got within seven points twice, with the latest coming with 6:38 remaining, but that would be the closest the Tomcats would get.

Armwood finished the day 4-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-7 behind the three-point line, and 10-of-15 from the free throw line. He also had a game-high three steals, to go along with three assists.

Sophomore Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) registered his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, both were season highs. Sophomore Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle) and junior John Arcuri (Oakmont, PA / Saint Joseph) each scored eight points. Domenick also had a game-high five assists.  Senior Paul Carswell (Painesville, OH / Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) added seven points. Sophomore Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) led on the glass with a game- and season-high 12 rebounds.

Westminster will next play at Bethany College (8-5, 4-2 PAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m.
