NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College men's basketball team was unable to recover from a 13-0 deficit and lost, 77-67, to Grove City College Wednesday night inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
Grove City (9-3, 4-1 PAC) started the game with a 13-0 lead with 16:37 on the clock. The Wolverines maintained their double-digit lead for the remainder of the half and led 43-26 at intermission.
In the second half, the Wolverines led 66-47 with 4:53 remaining. Westminster (2-10, 2-3 PAC), however, orchestrated a 12-1 run, capped off by a traditional three-point play by freshman
AJ Grant (Warren, OH / Warren JFK) - who made a dunk while being fouled and connected on the free throw - and trailed in single digits (67-59) for the first time in the game with 1:43 remaining. That, however, would be the closest the Titans would get for the remainder of the contest.
Grant led the Titan offense with a career-high 17 points (6 of 10 shooting, including 3 for 5 from behind the three-point line). Grant also earned a career-high and tied a team-high with six rebounds and led the Titan defense with two blocks and three steals, both career-highs. Sophomore
Jarret Vrabel (Canfield, OH / Canfield) added 10 points, while classmate
Deontay Scott (Youngstown, OH / East) had eight. Sophomore
Brandon Domenick (New Castle, PA / New Castle) and junior
Cameron Pozsgai (Windham, OH / Windham) each scored seven points. Pozsgai tied Grant with a team-high six rebounds. Domenick dished out a season-high six assists.
Westminster will next host Thiel College (5-7, 3-2 PAC) on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
