NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Westminster College women's basketball team lost to Carnegie Mellon University, 79-39, in a non-conference game at home Tuesday night.
Down 13-6 with 3:48 to play in the first quarter, Westminster went on a 4-0 run to cut Carnegie Mellon's lead to 13-10 with 1:04 on the clock. The run was capped off with a three-point field goal by Titan first-year
Annie Popoff (Erie, PA / Mercyhurst Prep).
The Tartans responded with an 8-0 run, which ended with 8:03 left in the second quarter, to take a 21-10 lead. The Tartans led 37-19 at halftime.
Carnegie Mellon (9-0) out-scored Westminster (0-9) 19-12 in the third quarter and 23-8 in the fourth.
Sophomore
Kristine Fromknecht (Erie, PA / McDowell) led the Titans with nine points, while Popoff had eight. Sophomore
Ashley McConahy (New Wilmington, PA / Ellwood City) and classmate
Danielle Dindak (West Homestead, PA / Serra Catholic) added six and five points, respectively. McConahy and sophomore
Kylie Cook (Pittsburgh, PA / Mount Lebanon) led Westminster on the glass with four rebounds each. McConahy tied a game-high with three offensive rebounds.
Jackie Hudepohl and Lisa Murphy led Carnegie Mellon with 24 and 23 points, respectively. Murphy also had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Titans will next play at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Saint Vincent College (5-4, 1-2 PAC) on Saturday, Jan. 2, at 4 p.m.
