NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College men's soccer team broke a tie through 34 minutes with visiting Pitt-Bradford before throttling the Panthers, 8-1, Wednesday in non-conference action.
After freshman forward Coty Hainsey (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) scored his third goal in three games in the 15th minute, Pitt-Bradford came back to tie game, 1-1, on a goal by Kyle Warner.
Sophomore midfielder Jarred Smeltzer (Wilmerding, Pa./East Allegheny) scored the game-winner in the 34th minute on an assist from junior Justin Flowers (Verona, Pa./St. Joseph). Smeltzer scored the first two goals of his Westminster career in the game by adding another goal in the 54th minute.
Other goal-scorers in the game included Flowers, junior Brice Lott (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum), sophomore Aaron Zavora (Westmoreland City, Pa./Norwin), senior Garrett Horvath (Southlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll), and freshman James Gross (McDonald, Pa./McGuffey).
The Titans outshot the Panthers, 35-8.
Westminster improves its record to 3-1 while Pitt-Bradford is now 1-1-1. The Titans return to action Saturday against Christopher Newport at 1 p.m. in the first round of a weekend tournament at Marietta.
