Westminster Undergoing Stadium Renovation That Includes Lighting and FieldTurf

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - A stadium renovation project estimated at $1.7 million is underway at Westminster College. Renovations to Memorial Field and Harold Burry Stadium will include lighting and artificial turf. In addition, the Joseph B. Fusco Plaza and an entranceway named in memory of Jerry C. Neff will be constructed around the existing stadium.

Construction crews have already begun digging the old field to prepare for the new synthetic surface that will be installed with the FieldTurf brand surface. The former grass surface was used sparingly - and maintained extensively - to preserve it for football home games. A new synthetic surface, along with stadium lighting, will maximize scheduling opportunities for football as well as other varsity teams and campus activities.

"The great thing about artificial turf is its flexibility for serving different sports and activities and its capacity for heavy use," said Westminster Athletic Director Jim Dafler. "This project will end up benefiting just about every student at Westminster College."

While work is yet to begin on the Fusco Plaza, school officials have approved the plans, which are included in the $1.7 million. Fusco played at Westminster before leading the Titan football team to four national championships as head coach from 1972-90 and being elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001. The entranceway will be a memorial for Neff, the Westminster Board of Trustees member and Towering Titan Organization co-founder who passed away on Oct. 2, 2007. Neff was a basketball player at Westminster in the early 1950s and a member of the Titan Sports Hall of Fame.
