Women's soccer falls to Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) decision to Franciscan Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster fell to 6-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in PAC action. Franciscan improved to 6-0-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play. 

The Titans kept Franciscan off the board through a late first-half push, with senior Emily Codere (Shelton, Conn., Shelton) saving attempts in the 35th minute and 45th minute. Earlier, senior Jocelyn Gratchic (Connellsville, Pa., Connellsville) put a shot on goal in the 17th minute and the Titans generated three corner kicks, including two in a 31-second span midway through the half. The first half ended scoreless.

Franciscan went ahead 1-0 on Catherine DeWolf's goal in the 65th minute, and the Titans spent much of the remainder of the second half pressing for a response. Seniors Abbey Whaley (Monongahela, Pa., Ringgold), Gratchic and Giulianna Russell (Kinston, N.C., Wayne Christian) generated shots during a stretch from 65:36 to 77:07, with Gratchic and Russell each putting attempts on frame. Codere added a save in the 80th minute, and sophomore Zoe Puhala's (Brockway, Pa., Brockway) shot in the final minute was saved. 

Codere totaled six saves while playing all 90 minutes in goal. Gratchic led the Titans with three shots, including two on goal. Freshman Quinn Arnold (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon), Russell and Puhala each put their lone shot on goal.

Franciscan outshot Westminster 13-8 and had a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Titans finished with five corner kicks to the Barons' three.

Westminster continues PAC play at Geneva Tuesday. Kickoff from Reeves Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
