Westminster wins season-opening invitational

Rankin earns medalist honors on second playoff hole

NEW CASTLE, Pa.--The Westminster women's golf team opened its season with a team title Saturday afternoon at its home invitational. Senior Katie Rose Rankin (Sewickley, Pa., North Allegheny) claimed medalist honors after winning on the second playoff hole. The six-team event was hosted by the Avalon Field Club at New Castle.

Westminster finished with a team score of 357. Grove City was the runner-up with a 362. Westminster's 'B' team finished in third place (390). 

Rankin and Grove City senior Lauren Kardos were tied after 18 holes, with both shooting nine-over 80s. Each posted a five on the first playoff hole, the par-4 No. 8, before Rankin fired a four and Kardos a six on the par-4 No. 9.

Junior Ava Liburdi (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) was fifth with an 86. Sophomore Madey Myers (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) was eighth (93) while sophomore CeCe Morgan (Fairview, Pa., Cathedral Prep) tied for 14th (99). Sophomore Paige Ponteous (Butler, Pa., Butler) tied for 18th (106). 

Freshman Izzy Sciulli (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) and sophomore Brooke Hart (Meadville, Pa., Meadville) finished seventh (92) and ninth (94), respectively, to lead the 'B' team. Senior Taylor Temple (Butler, Pa., Butler) tied for 14th (99) and freshman Annie Arnold (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) was 17th (105). 

Up next:
Westminster will participate in Olivet's Kyle Campbell Memorial Tournament next Friday and Saturday. The event will be played at the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall, Mich.
