Westminster splits with Bethany

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster baseball team secured a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) split against Bethany Friday afternoon, suffering a 5-3 loss in game one before rebounding with a 6-1 triumph in the nightcap. 

Westminster owns a 22-9 overall record and is 12-4 in the league. 

Game 1: Bethany 5, Westminster 3
Bethany broke a 3-3 deadlock with a pair of runs in the eighth. 

Senior Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) took the no-decision, allowing three runs (3 earned) on eight hits with two walks and a strikeout in 5.0 innings. Sophomore Ty Carrier (New Bethlehem, Pa., Redbank Valley) suffered the relief loss, allowing two runs (2 earned) on three hits with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings. 

Junior Nate Demchak (Monroeville, Pa., Gateway) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Ian Temple (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) was 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks. Junior Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) hit a one-out, run-scoring triple in the seventh to tie the game at 3-all. 

Game 2: Westminster 6, Bethany 1
Westminster's four-run fourth fueled its game two victory.

Junior Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) hit a two-run double to get things going. He finished with three RBIs. Sophomore Tom Rook (Clarence Center, N.Y., Clarence) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. It was his 11th multi-hit game this year. Rook is riding an eight-game hitting streak. Junior Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) drew three walks and scored twice. 

Junior Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory) pushed his season record to 4-2, allowing one run (earned) on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Sophomore Jack Strausser (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) earned the three-inning save. He walked two and struck out five. 

Up next:
Westminster will return to action next Wednesday at Thiel. The first pitch of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
