Westminster edges Chatham

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster freshman Zayden Herb (New Castle, Pa., Neshannock) scored early in the first half, and his goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Chatham Friday night at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster had dropped two-straight matches before Friday win. The Titans improved to 6-5-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the PAC. Chatham fell to 3-9-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the league.

Herb headed in a cross from freshman Kohen Salazar (San Angelo, Texas, Rockwall) in the 14th minute. The goal was Herb's fourth this season. It was Salazar's first assist of the year. Chatham pressed after the goal, with five corners and three shots on goal during a seven-minute stretch, but freshman Vasilis Kouvelas (Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek) saved all three to keep the Titans in front. The Titans took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Kouvelas making a pair of saves during a Chatham push in the 67th minute. The Titans also generated pressure with five corner kicks in a three-minute span and later put shots on goal from sophomore Alexis Bennetot (Miami, Fla., Florida Christian) and freshman Daniel Schweitzer (Shippenville, Pa., Clarion).

Kouvelas made five saves in the shutout. It was his fourth this season.

Chatham finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots and had five shots on goal compared to Westminster's four. Westminster had an 11-9 edge in corner kicks.
