Women open campaign with draw

CRESSON, Pa.-The Westminster College women's soccer program opened its season with a 1-1 draw at Mount Aloysius Friday afternoon. 

Westminster started a pair of first-year players in the season opener: defender Hailey McQueen (Sellersville, Pa., Faith Christian Academy) and midfielder Autum Fichter (North Canton, Ohio, Hoover). Chloe Lindquist (Ogden, Utah, Ogden), a senior transfer from the University of Puget Sound, and Giulianna Russell (Kinston, N.C., Wayne Christian), a junior transfer from Earlham College, also earned starts Friday. 

Seventeen players saw action Friday for Westminster. 

Maggie Carson scored in the third minute off a Natalie Despot assist to give Mount Aloysius a 1-0 lead at Kelly Field. Junior midfielder Abbey Whaley (Monongahela, Pa., Ringgold) evened the match at 1-1 in the 43rd minute. The first half goal was the second of her career and first since Westminster's 11-0 shutout of Penn State Altoona on Sept. 6, 2023. 

Senior Morgan Murphy (Yardley, Pa., Villa Joseph Marie) made a pair of stops. Friday was her 52nd career start. 

Westminster outshot Mount Aloysius 12-4 and finished the match with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. 

Next:
Westminster will head to Huntingdon County Saturday to take on Juniata. The match is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. The Titans opened the 2024 season with a 5-1 victory over the Golden Eagles at the UPMC Sports Complex.
