Westminster advances with win over top-seeded W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore centerfielder Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the home half of the seventh inning, scoring sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) for what held up as the eventual game-winning run in a 5-4 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Championship Tournament elimination game victory over Washington & Jefferson College Thursday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.

Westminster, the tournament's No. 4 seed, improved to 17-21. Thursday's win over W&J in the championship tournament was Westminster's first since defeating the Presidents in the 2012 title game, 6-0. Vince Iosue fired a complete game shutout in the title-clinching win, scattering five hits while walking two and striking out three. It was Westminster's second, and most recent, PAC title.

Friday, the Titans will take on No. 5 Saint Vincent College at 2:30 p.m. in another elimination game. Saint Vincent advanced with a 15-12, 10-inning elimination game win over No. 6 Thiel College Thursday.

Junior rightfielder Andrew Wolf (Dillsburg, Pa., Northern York) evened the game at 1-all in the second with an RBI double that scored Marquis, who drew a two-out hit by pitch. W&J sent eight men to the plate in its three-hit, three-run fifth to grab a 4-2 lead.

Graduate catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) smacked a one-out, one-run triple in the sixth before Wolf's two-out RBI single to left tied the game at 4-4. Senior designated hitter Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) was intentionally walked with one out before Tomko reached out a fielder's choice a batter later, advancing Davis to second and Lyons to third, who singled earlier in the inning. Marquis followed with his bases-loaded free pass.

Senior righty Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) earned the win in relief of sophomore right-hander Tyson Djakovich (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory). Djakovich went 5.0 innings in the no-decision, allowing four runs (4 earned) on seven hits with a pair of walks issued. Gibbons 4.0 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out three.

Westminster had four batters finished with two hits. Senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler), the Titans' leadoff hitter, went 2-for-4 and was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the eighth. He is riding a 17-game hitting streak. Lyons, the No. 2 hitter, was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Tomko finished 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and RBI and a run scored while Wolf went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
