Westminster eliminated by No. 19 Pfeiffer at Division III Championships

SALISBURY, Md.--The Westminster College softball program was dealt a 3-1 loss by No. 19 Pfeiffer University in the first elimination game of the Salisbury Regional Friday afternoon at Margie Knight Sea Gull Stadium.

Westminster wrapped up its season with a 28-13 record. Pfeiffer, currently 36-8 and facing the University of Mount Union in its second elimination game of the day, had the game halted in the eighth inning tied 1-1. Pfeiffer, the home team, has runners at first and third with no outs. The game is scheduled to restart Saturday morning.

Pfeiffer took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Emma Chopko scored on a wild pitch. She singled with two outs in the inning before advancing to third on an Emily Dickerson double.

Senior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) led off the home half of the third with a single before stealing second base. She scored on sophomore catcher Faith Jones' (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) double. It was Jones' ninth double of the year and 33rd RBI of the season.

Charly Cooper broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh inning with a two-out, two-run home run to left field.

Freshman right-hander Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) took the loss, falling to 17-6 this season. She gave up three runs (3 earned) on four hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Piper's 168 strikeouts this year are the third-most in program history. Her 17 victories this year are tied for fourth-most among program leaders.

Senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) finished 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Sophomore Leah Taliani (Arnold, Pa., Valley) had a pinch hit single to lead off the fifth inning.

This was Westminster's second-straight year appearing in the regional round of the Division III Championships.
