Westminster rolls in quarterfinal win over Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse program secured a 17-8 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament quarterfinal victory over Thiel College Tuesday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Westminster improved to 12-5 with the win and will advance to the league's championship tournament semifinal round for the first time since winning the title in 2019. Thiel wrapped up its season with an 11-5 record. 

Junior attacker Julia Ravazza (Twain Harte, Calif., Dublin) finished with five goals, four assists and five draw controls while freshman midfielder Ava Kessler (White Oak, Pa., Norwin) totaled three goals, three assists, one ground ball and seven draw controls. Freshman midfielder Allyssa Anstis (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) scored five goals and added three ground balls and three draw controls. 

Junior defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers and junior attacker Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) scored one goal and had two assists, four ground balls, one caused turnovers and two draw controls. Senior defender Shea O'Donnell (Hatfield, Pa., Lansdale Catholic) chipped in with three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls. 

Sophomore Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) earned the win, posting nine saves and two ground balls. 

At the end of the first quarter, Westminster had a 3-1 lead with goals from Ravazza, junior attacker Chloe Courinos (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) and Anstis. Anstis scored three more times in the second and Ravazza added a pair of goals to help Westminster take a comfortable 10-4 lead into halftime. Thiel cut the lead to four, 10-6 with just under 12 minutes to go in the third before the Titans, behind two more Ravazza scores, closed out the quarter with four-straight goals to go into the fourth quarter leading 14-6. A woman-up Kessler goal with just under four to play, followed by a woman-down goal by Anstis with under two to go, stretched the lead to 10, 17-7. 

Westminster put 30 of its 46 shots on goal and was successful on 21 of its 31 clear attempts. Thiel managed 23 shots, putting just 14 on goal. 

Ashlyn Wightman, the No. 2 scorer in Division III, finished with four goals and one assist and added three ground balls, two caused turnovers and seven draw controls for Thiel. Madison Liggett made 15 saves and had six ground balls in the loss. 

Up Next:
Westminster will take on top-seeded Grove City College in the semifinal round Thursday at 7 p.m. The opening draw from Robert E. Thorn Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
