Jones shines in Senior Day victory

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse program celebrated its Senior Recognition Day Saturday at the UPMC Sports Complex with a 38-4 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Thiel College. The Titans' 38 goals established a new single-game program record. 

Westminster's 38 goals surpassed the previous record of 33, set in a 33-4 home win over Franciscan University on April 24, 2021. Saturday's 66 points (34G, 28A) also set a new program high-water mark. Forty players saw action for Westminster on Saturday, with 15 players scoring at least one goal and 19 registering at least a point. 

The win moved Westminster to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in conference action. Thiel has dropped six straight, falling to 1-12 overall and 0-6 in the PAC.

Prior to the opening faceoff, Westminster's five seniors were honored: Geoffrey Worsey (Frederick, Md., Tuscarora)Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman)David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley)Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) and Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch)

Jones set new single-game records with 10 goals and 16 points (10G, 6A). He added four ground balls. Graduate attacker Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) finished with 10 points on four goals and six assists and added four ground balls. His 10 points and six assists were career bests. Freshman attacker Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) registered career highs in points, with 14, goals, with nine, and assists, with five. 

Freshman Jack Steimle (Mount Sinai, N.Y., Mount Sinai) went 18-of-23 at the X. The 18 faceoff wins were a career high, as were his seven ground balls. McGuinness finished with six ground balls and a caused turnover. Freshman long-stick Tanner Crosby (Park City, Utah, Park City) posted a career-high four caused turnovers and had one ground ball. Worsey tied his career high with five ground balls and had a caused turnover while junior short-stick Marshal Maguire (Arlington, Va., Wakefield) finished with a career-best five ground balls. 

Three goalkeepers saw action for Westminster, with freshman Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) getting the start and earning his eighth win of the year. Junior Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) made four saves in 29 minutes while sophomore DJ Perez (Coral Gables, Fla., Christopher Columbus) stopped five second half shots. 

Westminster was successful on 28 of its 29 clear attempts and outshot Thiel 92-24, with a 67-13 edge in shots on goal. The Titans scored on five of their six man-up attempts.

Westminster will travel to Washington & Jefferson College on Wednesday. The opening faceoff from Alexandre Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
