Titans secure opening day split in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--The Westminster College softball program opened its 2025 season Sunday at THE Spring Games, falling in the opener 5-3 to North Park University before registering an 8-0 (5 inn.) victory over North Central University (Minn.).

Monday, Westminster will remain at the DiamondPlex Softball Complex in Winter Haven, taking on Lasell University at 9 a.m. and Gettysburg College at 11 a.m. 

Game 1: North Park 5, Westminster 3
North Park plated three runs in the first before freshman left fielder Sam Levac's (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) RBI groundout and junior right fielder Kelly Troup's (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) run-scoring single scored freshman designated player Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) and sophomore first baseman Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward), who worked back-to-back walks to start the inning. The Titans evened the game at 3-3 on Levac's RBI base hit in the fourth. 

Maddy Tan and Kayla Sapolu delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth for the Vikings. 

Maya Lafnear retired the side in the seventh to earn the complete-game win. She allowed three runs (2 earned) on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout. 

Sophomore Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) took the complete-game loss, giving up five runs (3 earned) on seven hits with four walks and six strikeouts. She went 2-for-3 at the plate. Levac finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Salazar was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. 

Game 2: Westminster 8, North Central (Minn.) 0 (5 inn.) 
Westminster piled up 13 hits and used a four-run fourth inning to secure Sunday's five-inning, run-rule win. 

Sophomore Grace Kissick (Portersville, Pa., Laurel) took the win in the circle, allowing just one hit while walking three and striking out six in 4.0 innings. Freshman Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) struck out one batter in the 1-2-3 fifth inning. 

Sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Her two-out, bases-loaded single in the fifth produced the game-winning run, scoring junior third baseman Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley). Piper and Boneysteele led off the frame with doubles. Freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) was 2-for-2 and smacked a second inning RBI double to left while Boneysteele finished 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. 

Sophomore catcher Faith Jones' (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) two-run double in the fourth scored O'Brien and Boneysteele to stretch the Titans' lead to 4-0. Senior centerfielder Sydney Lokay's (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) RBI double plated Jones to push the lead to 5-0. 

North Central's Addison Schroer suffered the loss, giving up eight runs (8 earned) on 13 hits with five walks and a strikeout in 4.2 innings. Erica Gilles' second inning single was the lone hit for the Rams.
