Titans edged by Juniata

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster women's basketball team was dealt a 56-50 loss by visiting Juniata Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) reached double figures for the fifth time this season for Westminster (4-6), finishing with 14 points. She went 5-of-13 from the field and connected on 4-of-10 three-point attempts. Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) added 10 points and six rebounds. 

Juniata (1-8) had four players finish in double figures. Emily McCann had 11 points and five rebounds. Emma Coolidge and Bri Bodtorf each posted double-doubles: Coolidge with 10 points and 17 rebounds and Bodtorf with 10 points and 12 boards. Olivia Berg added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. 

Tied 15-all after one quarter, the Eagles used a 9-0 spurt midway through the second to go up eight, 28-20, with under 20 seconds left in the half. Maryo's three-point bucket at the buzzer to trim Juniata's lead to five, 28-23, going into the break. She hit a pair of first half three-pointers. 

Cano's layup with 8:34 left in the third cut the deficit to just one, 28-27. A three-pointer from Berg, followed by a Botdorf layup, streched the Eagles' lead to eight, 43-35, with under a minute left in the period. Berg went 1-of-2 from the free throw line with three seconds to go to give Juniata a seven-point edge, 44-37, heading into the fourth. McCann knocked down a pair of free. throws with 32 seconds left to extend Juniata's lead to eight, 55-47. She scored five of her 10 points in the final quarter. 

Westminster shot 31.8 percent (21-66) from the field and went 6-of-21 (.286) from the three-point line. The Titans were just 2-of-10 (.200) from the charity stripe. Juniata shot 32.8 percent (19-58) from the floor and 27.3 percent (6-22) from three-point range. The Eagles went 12-of-19 (.632) from the free throw line. Juniata finished with a 52-39 advantage on the glass.
