Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

O'Brien's 16 kills powers Westminster to 3-1 win over Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) finished with a career-high 16 kills to go along with 18 assists and hit .355 to lead the Westminster College women's volleyball program to a four-set win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) North Division rival Thiel Thursday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Due to a power outage in the New Wilmington area the match, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was pushed to Thursday. Thursday also served as Faculty Appreciation Night, with the women's volleyball program celebrating the College's faculty and recognizing its 15 members that were on hand for their support of Westminster student-athletes.

Westminster, winners of three straight and six of its last seven, upped its overall record to 18-10 while improving to 9-6 in the league. Thursday was the program's third four-set win this season. The Titans won the opening set 25-23 before taking the second, 25-20. Thiel scored a 25-16 win in the third before Westminster battled back to win the fourth, 25-23.

O'Brien, who posted her third triple-double of the year in last Saturday's five-set win at Saint Vincent, recorded her sixth double-double Thursday night.

Senior Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry) added nine kills and junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) chipped in with seven kills and 18 digs. Seniors Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) and Jamie Robertson (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) had five kills each. Burgan had three block assists and Robertson added two. Senior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) had 24 assists, eight digs and a pair of service aces. Freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) finished with 18 digs. It was her 12th match this season finishing with double-digit digs.

Westminster worked through a dozen ties and seven lead changes to secure a 25-23 back-and-forth, opening-set win. O'Brien hit .286 in the first, finishing with four kills and six assists. Up 23-20 in the second, a successful replay review challenge by head coach Tammy Swearingen pushed the Titans' lead to 24-20 before a bad set by the Tomcats led to Westminster's 25-20 set win. O'Brien had four kills and six assists in the second. A 7-0 Thiel run quickly changed the complexion of the third set, with the Tomcats battling back from a 9-6 deficit to go up four, 13-9, before it scored 10 of the set's final 11 points to claim the 25-16 win. Carlie Reynolds highlighted the third for Thiel, with three-straight service aces to close out the set. She finished with five third set aces. Down 12-10 in the fourth, a quick 5-0 Thiel run led to a 15-12 lead. Westminster later responded with a four-point spurt to even the set at 20-all. Trailing by two, 22-20, the Titans scored five of the final six points in the fourth to earn a match-deciding 25-23 win. O'Brien hit .385 and had six kills in the fourth.

Daisy Jenness hit .304 and recorded 22 kills to pace Thiel (16-7, 11-4 PAC) offensively. Reynolds finished with a 35-assist, 15-dig double-double.
