Westminster falls at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio--The Westminster College men's basketball team suffered a 72-64 loss at Muskingum Saturday afternoon. 

Westminster (2-2) had four players finish in double figures. Graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) finished with 19 points, four rebounds and three assists. Senior Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) recorded 11 points and eight rebounds while senior Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, his first since totaling 20 points and 10 rebounds against Bethany on Feb. 17, 2024. He missed the 2024-25 season due to injury. Senior Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) added 10 points and three assists. 

Duane Davis had 31 points for Muskingum (5-0). Owen Emig added 20 points and seven rebounds. 

Westminster outscored Muskingum 11-2 over the final 3:34 to cut the Muskies' lead to one, 36-35, heading into halftime. Weir scored all 11 of his points in the opening half. The Titans shot 41.9 percent (13-31) from the field over the first 20 minutes.

A 9-0 run midway through the second helped Muskingum build a 12-point lead, 56-44. A Hergenrother three-points with four minutes left cut the Muskies' lead to three, 64-61. Muskingum went 4-of-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the eight-point win. Westminster was outscored 36-29 in the second. Harrell fired in 17 of his 19 in the final period.

Westminster will host Bryant & Stratton Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.
