Titans edged in five-set thriller

HIRAM, Ohio--The Westminster College women's volleyball program suffered a five-set Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss at Hiram Wednesday night inside Price Gymnasium.

Westminster fell to 12-9 overall and 4-5 in the PAC. Hiram ran its record to 16-2 overall and 8-1 in the league. 

Westminster took the first set 25-22 before Hiram took the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-14. The Titans, 25-12 winners in the fourth, fell in the pivotal fifth 17-15. 

Senior Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry) finished with 11 kills, seven digs and a pair of service aces. Junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) recorded her third double-double of the season, totaling 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) added seven kills while senior Jamie Robertson (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) and freshman Kylie Anthony (Harrison City, Pa., Penn-Trafford) each finished with five kills. Anthony also had 14 digs. 

Senior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) and sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) both recorded double-doubles as well. Nardone finished with 26 assists and 14 digs while O'Brien had nine kills, 17 assists and 13 digs. It was Nardone's third double-double of the season. The double-double was the sixth of the year for O'Brien. She had a triple-double, finishing with 11 kills, 12 assists and 13 digs, in Westminster's five-set loss to Hiram on Sept. 24 in New Wilmington. 

Sofia Smotek led Hiram with 20 kills and 13 digs. She had a season-high 23 kills in the Terriers' win on Sept. 24. 

Up next:
Westminster will host Waynesburg (2-18, 0-9 PAC) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday from Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. The College will be commemorating half a century of Westminster volleyball during its Homecoming and Reunion Weekend with a celebration prior to the opening serve.
