Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Westminster earns first victory of season

Fernandez nets first goal of year in Francis' first career win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore Santiago Fernandez (Lake City, Fla., Freedom) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 53rd minute to lift the Westminster College men's soccer team to a 1-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over visiting Allegheny Wednesday night at the UPMC Sports Complex.

The win was the first for first-year head coach Ryan Francis. Wednesday's victory was Westminster's first over Allegheny since a season-opening 4-1 triumph in 2021.

Westminster improved to 1-10-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the league.

Fernandez shifted momentum in the 53rd minute, scoring the game-winner on a through ball from freshman Ferlando David (Orlando, Fla., Oak Ridge). It was his first score of the season.

Senior Noah Wolford (Butler, Pa., Butler) anchored the defense, finishing with five saves in the shutout. It was his second clean sheet of the season. Junior Alex Laski (Buffalo, N.Y., Clarence), sophomores Nisho Simon (Kapolei, Hawaii, Mililani) and Trent Davey (Butler, Pa., Slippery Rock) and freshman David Lord (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint John Paul II Academy) all played 90 minutes along the Titans' sound, stingy backline.

Allegheny (5-7-4, 3-3-1 PAC) outshot Westminster 21-9 (10-3 in first half) while Westminster had the edge in shots on goal, 7-5. Allegheny finished with 10 corner kicks to Westminster's eight.

Up next:
Westminster will travel to Latrobe Saturday to take on Saint Vincent (10-2-3, 4-1-2 PAC). The match is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
