Westminster women edged by Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 74-65 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) defeat to visiting Allegheny College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Allegheny improved to 8-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Westminster fell to 1-12 overall and 1-7 in the PAC. 

Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) paced three Westminster players in double figures, tying her career high with 16 points. She went 7-of-12 from the floor and added five rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) finished with 15 points while sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) chipped in with a season-high 12. Senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Emily Lauer led Allegheny with 17 points. Sarah Santicola finished with a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double while Jess Bickart added eight rebounds to an 11-point, 10-assist double-double.

Allegheny led 21-14 after one quarter and, after a late 5-0 second quarter scoring run, went into halftime up eight, 38-30. Cano had 10 at the half for Westminster; Santicola had 10 at the break for Allegheny. Down 15, 53-38, with just over three minutes to go in the third, Westminster strung together a 10-0 run to cut Allegheny's lead down to five, 53-48, with 41 seconds left in the quarter. The Gators went into the fourth up seven, 55-48. The Gators, behind a 10-0 run to start the final quarter, saw its lead in the fourth swell to as many as 17 (68-51).

Westminster finished shooting 41.8 percent (23-55) from the field and went 11-of-12 (.917) from the free throw line. Allegheny finished with a 42-37 rebounding advantage, including a 16-6 edge on the offensive glass.
