Westminster opens PAC play with win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's tennis program opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 4-3 win over Washington & Jefferson College Monday afternoon. 

Westminster improved its record to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. W&J fell to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in PAC play. 

Westminster clinched the first team point with sweep in doubles action. Seniors Gia Francisco (Canfield, Ohio, Canfield) and Emma Sukal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) picked up a 6-2 win at No. 1 over Nidhi Pulicherla and Claire Loomis. Junior Christine Rossi (Jefferson Hills, Pa., Thomas Jefferson) and senior Ryleigh Valone (Erie, Pa., Villa Maria Academy) beat Mackenzie Gumto and Paisley Cole 6-2 at No. 2. Sophomore Emma Overlingas (Pittsburgh, Pa., Baldwin) and senior Taylor Dlugozima (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) won 6-2 at No. 3 against Pooja Potluri and Eden Ma.

Tied 1-1, Sukal scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jaylen Kennedy at No. 3 singles while Overlingas beat Gumto 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to give Westminster a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Morgan Allen (Johnstown, Pa., Westmont Hilltop) beat Ma 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6 singles to clinch the win for Westminster. Monday was the second-straight match Allen secured the winning point. 

Sukal and Overlingas both improved their singles records to 5-0 to start the season. Allen improved to 4-0. The Overlingas-Dlugozima pairing is now 4-0 in doubles. 

Westminster continues PAC play Thursday when it hosts Waynesburg University. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
