Westminster falls in regular season finale

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse team ended its regular season with a 19-8 non-conference loss to Wittenberg University Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Wittenberg improved to 8-5. Westminster fell to 10-7.

Junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) finished with three goals, two ground balls and one caused turnover. Senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) had two goals, one assist, one ground ball and a caused turnover. Senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) added one goal, one assist and one ground ball. Freshman midfielder Grady Tierney (Clear Lake Shores, Texas, Houston Christian) finished with two assists and a caused turnover. 

Senior faceoff Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) went 13-for-23 at the faceoff X and finished with nine ground balls. O'Malley became the single-season faceoff wins leader with 191. Senior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) finished had three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Asher Silberling (Redondo Beach, Calif., Redondo Union) finished with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

Dillon McKeigue led Wittenberg with nine goals, three assists and two ground balls. Chase Singleton earned the win in net with nine saves. Charlie Frederick went 9-for-11 at the faceoff X and had three ground balls. 

Wittenberg outscored Westminster 9-2 in the first quarter while Westminster outscored Wittenberg 4-3 in the second to cut the lead to six, 12-6, at the half. Wittenberg went on to score four in the third period and three more in the fourth. Clark scored the Titans' lone goal in the third while Jones scored with under a minute left in regulation.  

Wittenberg outshot Westminster 45-43 and had a 24-22 edge in shots on goal. Westminster went 18-of-20 on clear attempts and Wittenberg went 28-of-33. 

Westminster has earned the No. 4 seed in next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament. The Titans will travel to No. 1 Grove City College on Wednesday. The opening faceoff from Robert E. Thorn Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
