Titans downed at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio--The Westminster College baseball team suffered a 14-3 non-conference loss to Hiram College Wednesday afternoon at Fishel Field at Proverbs Park. 

Hiram improved to 12-11 while Westminster fell to 10-14. 

Eight players combined for nine hits Wednesday for the Titans. Sophomore first baseman Nicholas Vitale (New Castle, Pa., Union) went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman center fielder Nate Demchak (Monroeville, Pa., Gateway) doubled in the second while junior Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) delivered a pinch hit RBI base hit in the eighth. 

Nine different pitchers were used. Junior righty Dwight Parker (Youngstown, Ohio, Liberty), Wednesday's starter, took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season. He allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts in three innings. 

Jacob Koces ran his record to 3-2 with the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits with a strikeout in seven innings of work. Hiram pounded out 18 hits Wednesday. Matthew Trimble went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Ethan Lyke was 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. 

Westminster snagged a 2-0 lead in the second on back-to-back RBI singles by Vitale and freshman second baseman DJ Donatelli (Hermitage, Pa., Hickory). Hiram scored the bottom half of the next six innings to go up 14-2. Beach's run-scoring single closed out the scoring.

Westminster hosts Saint Vincent College Saturday. The first pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
