Baseball gets second-straight Myrtle Beach win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--The Westminster College baseball team posted a 12-1 victory over Penn College at The Ripken Experience® Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday's game was played at the Polo Grounds in Myrtle Beach. Westminster, winners of three straight, evened its record at 3-3. Penn College fell 3-2.

Senior left-hander Logan Exler (Pittsburgh, Pa., Serra Catholic) picked up his first win of the year after allowing just one hit and striking out a career-high eight in six innings. Senior right-hander Trevor Leighty (Wooster, Ohio, Wooster) and sophomore righty Tyler Parsons (Hebron, Ky., Conner) fired scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

The Titans piled up 18 hits in Tuesday's win, including six doubles. Senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) was 4-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored while senior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Senior designated hitter Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Shawn Townsend had both of Penn College's hits. Jason Cute suffered the loss after allowing six runs (5 earned) on nine hits with three walks in 3.1 innings.

Up 7-0 after five innings, back-to-back run-scoring singles by Randza and Dockum keyed a four-run sixth to stretch the Titans' lead to 11-0. After leading off the seventh with a hit by pitch, junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) came around to score Westminster's 12th run on a fielding error.

Following an off day Wednesday, Westminster returns to action on Thursday against New England College. First pitch from Griffith Field is scheduled for 9 a.m.
