Westminster earns win at Chatham in PAC opener

PITTSBURGH--Eight different players found the back of the net for the Westminster College men's lacrosse program in Friday night's 10-6 victory over Chatham University at UPMC Graham Field. It was the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both schools.

Westminster, winners of three straight, is now 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the league. Friday was the Titans' fourth-straight win over the Cougars. Chatham fell to 5-5 overall.

A balanced offensive attack saw 10 players register at least a point. Junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) finished with a goal and two assists, marking his third-straight three-point effort this season. Sophomore attack Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) and junior long stick midfielder Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) had two goals apiece. It was the first two-goal game for McGuinness since a win at Davis & Elkins College on March 5, 2022.

Senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca), junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) and sophomore short stick defensive midfielder Asher Silberling (Redondo Beach, Calif., Redondo Union) each had a goal and an assist. Jones has scored in all nine games this season and has goals in each of his last 14, dating back to last season. Senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) and junior defender Geoffrey Worsey (Frederick, Md., Tuscarora) scored goals while sophomore short stick defensive midfielder Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) and freshman midfielder Anthony Trella (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) each added assists.

Sophomore Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) ran his season record to 5-2 with Friday's win. He made seven saves and had one ground ball. It was Tate's first PAC victory.

Senior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) led the impressive defensive effort, finishing with five ground balls and a season-best four caused turnovers. Jones added five ground balls and caused a turnover while junior defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) chipped in with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Hawkins and Silberling added four ground balls and a caused turnover each.

Senior faceoff Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) won 7-of-18 opportunities at the X and had one ground ball.

Six different players scored for Chatham. Tanner Marsh had a goal and two assists. Brett Zaruba finished with 22 saves.

Knotted at 3-3 after the opening quarter, Waight's man-up goal just over 11 to go in the second gave the Titans a 4-3 lead. Sentz scored off of a Clark assist with 7:16 left in the half to push Westminster ahead 5-4. The Titans carried the one-goal advantage into halftime.

Westminster came out hot in the third, outscoring Chatham 5-2 in the period, with Page bookending the scoring. The Titans led 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Tate made three of his seven saves in the fourth and stopped back-to-back shots on goal with under three minutes left in regulation.

Westminster finished with a 44-28 edge in shots and a 32-13 advantage in shots on goal. The Titans were successful on 23 of their 29 clear attempts and managed to turn Chatham over 27 times.

Westminster hosts Franciscan University Wednesday. The opening faceoff from the UPMC Sports Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m.
