Titans open PAC schedule with split

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule with a split at Grove City College Monday afternoon. The Wolverines rallied for a 2-1 game one win at Jack Behringer Field before the Titans secured a 4-1 victory in game two.

Westminster is now 6-10 overall and 1-1 in the league while Grove City sits at 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the PAC.

On Saturday Westminster will host Allegheny College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game 1: Grove City 2, Westminster 1
Scoreless through five innings, senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) reached base on a one-out throwing error before scoring an unearned run two batters later on another throwing error to stake the Titans to a 1-0 lead. Nick Sampson and Sam Bevin got things going in the seventh with back-to-back singles to start the inning before Josh Minnich evened the score with a run-scoring single. Bevin, who advanced to third on the Minnich base hit, scored the go-ahead run later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Senior right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) suffered the complete game loss, allowing two runs (2 earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks. Sophomore first baseman Josh Reed's (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) one-out single in the third was Westminster's lone hit in the opener.

Nick Guidas struck out eight batters in the complete-game victory.

Game 2: Westminster 4, Grove City 1
Senior designated hitter Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) was the fourth-straight batter to reach in the top of the fourth, and his RBI single down the right field line pushed Westminster ahead 1-0. Murgenovich, after leading off the sixth with a double, scored on an error following junior shortstop Braeden Campbell's (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) base hit. Senior center fielder Matthew Randza's (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) two-run single in the seventh stretched the Titans' lead to 4-0. Markus Williams doubled in Minnich in the bottom of the eighth for Grove City.

Six different players had hits for Westminster. Murgenovich's sixth-inning double and junior Derek Beach's (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) pinch hit double to open the ninth were the Titan's only extra-base hits.

Junior lefty Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa., Union) picked up his first victory of the season in Monday's nightcap, allowing one run (1 earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks in eight innings. Senior left-hander Logan Exler (Pittsburgh, Pa., Serra Catholic) worked a scoreless ninth inning to record his first save of the season.

Minnich went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Grove City. Bevin took the loss, allowing three runs (2 earned) on four hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk in six innings.
