Titans drop home opener to Ohio Northern

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse team opened its 2024 schedule Friday night with a 15-12 loss to Ohio Northern University at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Ohio Northern improved to 3-1 with Friday's win. 

Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) finished with a game-high six points for the Titans, totaling five goals and an assist. Rascona added four ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) scored four goals and added one assist while posting four ground balls, a caused turnover and four draw controls. Senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) scored twice and added two ground balls, two caused turnovers and five draw controls and freshman attack Morgan Clark (Bridgeville, Pa., South Fayette) had a pair of assists. 

Freshmen goalkeepers Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) and Amelia Mason (White Lake, Minn., Lakeland) shared net time Friday. Snyder, the starter, played 45 minutes and allowed eight goals while stopping four shots. Mason played all 15 minutes of the third quarter, allowing seven goals and making five saves.

Emma Hoersten and Elizabeth Graham each scored five goals for Ohio Northern while Kassidy Elzey and Elena Martin scored two goals each. Elzey finished with 11 ground balls, four caused turnovers and six draw controls while Martin added four ground balls, two caused turnovers and seven draw controls. Chloe Millican stopped eight shots and had three ground balls to secure her third win in net for the Polar Bears.

Trailing 5-0 after a quarter, Westminster outscored Ohio Northern 7-2 in the second to go into halftime tied 7-7. Rascona scored four of her five goals in the second. Elzey registered a pair of back-to-back woman-up goals in the third that extended Ohio Northern's lead to 10-8. Two goals from Hoetsten and another from Graham upped the Polar Bears' lead to four, 14-10, going into the fourth quarter. Rascona's woman-up goal with under six minutes left cut the deficit to four, 15-11, and Brazier's goal with under a minute left closed out the scoring. 

Westminster hosts Alfred University Wednesday at 4 p.m.
