DePietro's career day leads Westminster to win

Four finish in double figures against Alma

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Sophomore guard Brady DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) scored a career-high 19 points Thursday afternoon to help the Westminster College men's basketball program knock off visiting Alma College, 81-73,  Thursday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. 

Westminster snapped a six-game losing streak on Thursday, improving to 3-7 overall. Alma lost its ninth-straight game to start the year. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools. 

DiPietro finished 6-of-9 from the floor and went 6-of-9 from the free throw line in 32 reserve minutes. He added five rebounds and a pair of assists. Junior guard Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) registered his first career double-double in the triumph, finishing with 13 points and a career-high 11 boards. He added four assists and three steals. Sophomore guard Justin Wypasek (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds, four asissts and three steals while freshman forward Michael Burbach (West Farmington, Ohio, Bristol) totaled 11 points and five rebounds. 

Donovan Collins led three Alma players in double figures with 24. 

Alma led by eight, 41-33, at halftime. Collins scored 12 of his 24 in the first. Burbach paced Westminster with eight points. The Titans outscored the Scots 48-32 in the second. After Logan St. Martin's layup pushed Alma's lead to double digits, 43-33, 30 seconds into the second half, Westminster used a 14-0 scoring run to grab a 47-43 lead with a little of 14 minutes remaining. Hergenrother fueled the run with six. An 8-2 spurt midway through the half, thanks to six points from DePietro, pushed Westminster's lead to 10, 55-45. The Titans' lead swelled to as many as 16, 70-54, in the second. 

Westminster shot 45.3 percent (29-64) from the field and made five of its 13 three-point field goal attempts. The Titans made a season-high 18 free throws (26 attempted, .692) and committed a season-low six turnovers. Westminster flipped 11 Alma turnovers into 17 points.

Westminster is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 4 against defending Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion Geneva College. Tipoff from Metheny Fieldhouse is scheduled for 3 p.m.
