Westminster women lose to Grove City at home

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program lost 62-47 to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City College in Tuesday afternoon's game on Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster's record fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in PAC play. Grove City improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the league.

Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She made four of her attempted 10 three-pointers. Marylo is currently tied for fifth in the PAC in made three-pointers (15). 

Freshman forward Ella Kassan (Streetsboro, Ohio, Streetsboro) finished with seven points, six rebounds and a steal. Sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) and sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) both scored six points. Arison went 2-of-2 from three-point range and had three assists. Cano added four rebounds and three steals. 

Grove City had two players finish in double figures. Clara Hannon had 18 points and five rebounds. Meredith Sherred finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. 

Westminster had one of its best halves of the young season and carried led 29-28 at the break, its first halftime lead of the year. The Titans, down 15-7 after one, outscored the Wolverines 22-13 in the second. Maryo had a first half high eight points on 3-of-4 shooting. Grove City led by seven, 46-39, after three, thanks to Hannon's 10 points. The Wolverines doubled up the Titans in the fourth, 16-8. 

Westminster went 7-of-19 (.368) from three-point range while Grove City did not convert a three-point field goal (0-15) Tuesday night. The Wolverines turned the Titans' 19 turnovers into 22 points while finishing with a convincing 46-18 edge in points scored in the paint.

On Wednesday, Westminster travels to take on Thiel College. The game on Maenpa Court inside Beeghly Gymnasium is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
