Westminster falls at home to Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College football program wrapped up its regular season Saturday afternoon, falling to visiting Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove College 36-9 at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium. 

Grove City, winners of four straight, improved to 9-1. Saturday snapped a six-game streak of games decided by 10 points or fewer in the series. Westminster fell to 7-3.

Freshman Andrew Caranna (Copley, Ohio, Revere) was a perfect 3-of-3 on field goal tries. He hit from 35 yards in the second and from 28 and 34 yards, respectively, in the third. Caranna is the first Westminster kicker to make three field goals in a game since Joshua Byers hit from 25, 31 and 24 yards in a 31-6 win over Geneva College on Nov. 13, 2021. 

Junior quarterback Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) finished 17-of-34 for 166 yards. He also rushed for 20 yards on three carries. McGowan threw his third interception of the season midway through the fourth quarter. Senior wide receiver Jalen Washington (Orlando, Fla., Dr. Phillips) was targeted 12 times in the loss. He caught six passes for 65 yards. Senior wide receiver Marcel Smith-Austin (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) finished with two catches for 20 yards while junior wide receiver Taite Beachy (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) caught two passes for 11 yards. 

Freshman Brite Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Monarch) finished with 142 all-purpose yards (71 receiving, 71 kickoff return). He snagged five passes for 71 yards, including a 22-yard grab up the seam from senior quarterback Billy Levak (Macedonia, Ohio, Nordonia) in the fourth. Cannon also had a 33-yard kickoff return in the second quarter. 

Junior linebacker Dylan Sleva (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) racked up a season-high 13 tackles (4 solo) and a tackle for loss. He had a career-high 14 stops in last year's loss at Grove City. Sophomore defensive tackle Jayden Jackson (Fort Pierce, Fla., Centennial) finished with a career-best nine tackles (1 solo) and a half-tackle for loss. Senior defensive back Kevin Wright (West Palm Beach, Fla., Seminole Ridge) had a season-high eight tackles (7 solo). He intercepted Logan Pfeuffer on Grove City's first play from the scrimmage in the fourth quarter. It was the eighth interception of his career. Wright also blocked a Daniel Sullivan extra-point attempt midway through the the third. Senior defensive backs Brice Butler (Farrell, Pa., Farrell) and Nate Bortnick (Conneautville, Pa., Conneaut) had seven tackles apiece.

Pfeuffer finished 10-of-14 passing with one touchdown and an interception. He also scored on a 1-yard rush midway through the third quarter. Scott Fraser caught six passes for 79 yards and Ryan Heckathorn scored on a 65-yard pass with just over two minutes left in the opening half. Ian Demeri ran 30 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns. He had a 88-yard rush midway seven minutes into the third quarter.

Noah Wheeler, Dominic DiNinno and Shay Aitken all had seven stops for Grove City. Ben Bladel finished with five tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. 

Grove City had 390 yards of total offense, including a 224-41 edge in rushing. The Wolverines ran 51 times and averaged 4.4 yards per rush.
