Titans roll into PAC Championship Tournament semifinals with five-set win over W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Down 2-1, the fourth-seeded Westminster College women's volleyball program registered a 25-17 fourth set win before sealing up a spot in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament semifinal round with a 15-12 fifth set win over No. 5 Washington & Jefferson College Tuesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

The Titans won the five-setter 21-25, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17, 15-12.

Westminster upped its season record to 20-14 with Tuesday's win. It was the program's second five-set victory over W&J in New Wilmington this season. Last season Westminster, then the No. 5 seed, suffered a 3-1 quarterfinal loss to No. 4 W&J. The Presidents fell to 16-13.

W&J rallied in the first set to win 25-21 before Westminster used a pair of four-point runs to claim a 25-17 second set win. In the third, tied at 11, W&J rattled off four-straight points to go up 15-11 before registering a 25-17 set win. Westminster, trailing by two, 10-8, in the fourth, strung together five-straight points to go up three, 13-10. Rambo had a pair of kills and junior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) served a pair of aces later in the set that swelled the Titans' lead to seven, 22-15. Junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) closed out the fourth with back-to-back kills.

Rambo got going in the fifth with four-straight blocks that helped the Titans jump out to a 5-0 lead. W&J stormed back to even the set at 10-10 before four-straight Westminster points pushed the lead to 14-10. Sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) closed out the fifth with a match-sealing kill.

Junior middle hitter Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) turned in a strong quarterfinal performance, hitting .300 with a 13-kill, 13-block double-double. She hit .889 with eight kills in the first set loss. Brady finished with 16 kills and six digs. Brady also had a 16-kill effort in the Titans' five-set win over the Presidents on Oct. 23. Junior right side Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) hit .231 with 11 kills, four block assists and three digs. Junior middle hitter Jamie Robertson (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) and Trent each had eight kills. Robertson had four of her eight kills in Westminster's fourth set win. Trent added 17 digs.

Nardone posted a 30-assist, 17-dig double-double, her 17th this season. The 30 assists were a career high for Nardone. She also added four service aces. Freshman setter Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) added 17 assists and seven digs. Freshman libero Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) racked up a career-high 52 digs. The 52 digs are the most in a five-set Division III match this year.

Sophie Little paced W&J offensively, hitting .333 with 18 kills and five blocks. Brielle Moorhouse had 29 assists while Piper McFarland had 34 digs.
